RIAA to halt lawsuits, cozy up to ISPs instead

At last, the music industry admits what we've known for years: That filing music-swapping lawsuits against teenagers, little old ladies, and corpses is a fool's errand (not to mention an expensive headache for the defendants). But don't worry—the RIAA has something new up its sleeves.

The new strategy (as reported by the Wall Street Journal): If the music industry finds out that you're swapping music files online, it'll send an e-mail to your ISP (agreements have already hashed out agreements with "some" unnamed service providers, apparently), which will in turn forward the message to you—probably with a little "P.S." asking you to stop. [Update: CNET has a copy of the RIAA's form letter to ISPs.]If you don't stop, well ... your service provider probably won't sue you, but it might slow down your broadband connection, or cut off your service altogether.So, why has the RIAA changed the play?

Well, maybe it's been looking at reports like this one from the NPD Group, which shows that U.S. CD sales continue to slide, while the number of tunes shared via P2P sites continues to increase, despite all the litigation. And then there's the disastrous headlines, as the RIAA relentlessly tracked down and sued tens of thousands of alleged music pirates. Among them: Kids, octogenarians, and a few dead people.Reaction to the news? Mixed. Engadget's headline reads (in part): "RIAA finds its soul," with the story noting that while the RIAA reserves the right to go after "heavy uploaders or repeat offenders ... it appears that single mothers are in the clear."

All Things Digital has a darker outlook, speculating that ISPs—which "care about the cost of moving lots of data around … [and] want to make money by selling, renting, or just offering up Hollywood's movies and TV shows to subscribers"—might be more than content to "cut off file-sharers … [or] simply [charge] heavy file-sharers a lot of money."And here's another possibility, courtesy of yours truly: Say your ISP catches you sharing tunes via P2P. No problem—download away! But when you get your next cable bill, you'll find the itemized songs added to your monthly charge, kind of like an iTunes bill.Call it the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" strategy.

P.S. Make no mistake—just because the RIAA has stopped filing new music-swapping lawsuits doesn't mean that it's dropped the existing ones, according to the Journal. Quite the contrary.

YOUNG JEEZY, T.I., & LUDACRIS JOINT CONCERT...

On Saturday December 27, Atlanta’s three biggest Hip-Hop artists; T.I., Ludacris, and Young Jeezy will deliver their first ever joint concert for Long Island’s Holiday Bash ’08.



The all-star show was the brainchild of Ludacris, who in a November interview with MTV expressed his desire to go on tour with other elite emcees from his hometown.



“I haven’t confirmed anything yet. It’s little talks here and there,” Ludacris cryptically stated. “But I’ll put it out there: I would love to do a tour where it’s me, T.I. and Jeezy. Me, Tip, and Jeezy would be outrageous. But nothing is confirmed yet.”



Based on how well the one-time concert does, an official nationwide tour could be announced shortly.



All three artists have released high-profile albums this year: T.I.’s Paper Trail (1X Platinum), Young Jeezy’s The Recession (Gold), and Ludacris’ Theater of the Mind.



The show will also boast additional performances from R&B newcomer Kristy Scott, and New York’s own Nina Sky and Jim Jones.



Hot 97’s Angie Martinez and DJ Enuff will host the evening, with Cipha Sounds handling DJ duties.



Before the show, fans will be treated to an exclusive meet and greet with the artists.



Tickets for the event range from $35.50-$125.50 and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com, or the Nassau Coliseum box office Monday-Friday, 9:30AM-4:30PM.

Ebony Son Management is also responsible for molding the illustrious career of rapper and actor Ludacris, along with offering guidance to clients, Young Jeezy and Swizz Beats.

Don Cannon amicably parted ways from former management, La the Darkman and DJ Sense of the Aphiliates Music Group in January, 2008, due to business and creative differences for the vision of Cannon Music, LLC. In regards to clarifying any speculation regarding the split with the Aphiliates Music Group, Cannon states, "The split is merely a business and creative difference, musically, nothing to do with the personal relationship. We are on good terms, and speak often."

Cannon has been doing great music for a while now.He is beyond talented and I wish him the best in the future.

EMINEM SPEAKS ON NEW ALBUM......

Eminem has revealed details of his long-awaited new album, "Relapse," in an exclusive interview with Billboard, conducted via email. The set is due next spring from Shady/Interscope.

Eminem is working on "Relapse" with longtime collaborator Dr. Dre, who put his own album, "Detox," on the backburner to help bring the project to completion.

"Me and Dre are back in the lab like the old days, man," Eminem says. "Just him banging away on tracks and me getting that little spark that makes me write to it. I don't have chemistry like that with anyone else as far as producers go -- not even close. Dre will end up producing the majority of the tracks on Relapse.' We are up to our old mischievous ways ... let's just leave it at that."

A handful of songs intended for "Relapse" have leaked online, most recently "Crack a Bottle," leaving Eminem "really heated. It wasn't close to finished, and it even has me doing guide vocals for Dre as a suggestion of how he could lay his verses down. It's like someone catches you peeping in your window before you got the Spider Man costume all zipped up! Nobody is supposed to see that. We are gonna finish it up though and get it out there how it's supposed to be."

Eminem also responded to producer Swizz Beats' recent comment that he'd submitted a track for the project described as a sequel to the hit single "Stan," telling Billboard, "I haven't worked with Swizz on this album.


"There isn't a 'Stan 2,' and there won't be," he says. "Stan drove his car off a bridge and I'm not writing a song as Stan's ghost. That would just be really corny."

While working on "Relapse," Eminem was also writing his autobiography, "The Way I Am," with Sacha Jenkins. The book has received favorable reviews and has spent time in the top 20 of the New York Times hardcover nonfiction best-sellers list.

''Britney Spears Circus album will debut at #1 on next week's Billboard albums chart, selling just under 505,100 copies. It's Spears' fifth album to debut at #1 on the chart, and it sold nearly twice as many copies as last year's Blackout album, which was denied the top spot on the chart by the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden.

Circus' first-week sales total is certainly big, but it's only the sixth biggest opening of 2008, behind albums like Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, AC/DC's Black Ice, Coldplay's Viva la Vida, Taylor Swift's Fearless and T.I.'s Paper Trail. Still, it outpaced the first-week numbers of some of Brit's pop peers, including Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce, Mariah Carey's E = MC2 and Miley Cyrus' Breakout.

Interestingly enough, the Brit-sanity was so high among album buyers that Blackout also managed to return to the charts, selling more than 4,600 copies to land at #198.

Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, told The Associated Press that the success of Circus really does signify Brit's triumphant return. "At the end of the day, I think she is America's pop princess, and the world's pop princess, and this just reconfirms it to everyone who doubted it," he said. "Professionally, she's feeling great. ... It's great for her to hear that she's got a #1 album again."

Swift's Fearless lands in the #2 spot on the albums chart for the second-straight week, selling 193,500 copies. Beyoncé's Sasha Fierce is at #3, with sales of more than 152,800 copies. Last week's chart champ, Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak, drops to #4, with sales of close to 141,700 copies. Nickelback's Dark Horse rounds out the top five, selling 133,400 copies.

The rest of the top 10 features the "Twilight" soundtrack at #6; the week's other big-name debut, Akon's Freedom at #7; the soundtrack to "High School Musical 3" at #8; the ubiquitous hits collection Now That's What I Call Music! 29 at #9; and David Cook's self-titled effort at #10.

Aside from Circus and Freedom (which sold 110,600 copies), other notable debuts on next week's chart include Scarface's Emeritus (#24, with 42,000 copies sold), Neil Young's Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 (#40, with 26,400 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Beyoncé's new movie, "Cadillac Records" (#66, with 15,600 copies sold). A lot of things can be twisted to make it seem as if a person was literally being intentionally offensive. I don't believe this is the case for this situation.
